Can't sit. Can't crawl. What now?
Question: My baby is 10.5 months old today. All she does is roll. If I put her in sitting position, she will sit. But she will never come to a sitting postion on her own. I am trying my best to get her crawling. She really gets frustrated and doesn't like the different things I encourage her to do. Can you help?
Answer: First thing I can suggest is to encourage tummy lying as much as possible. You may also want to try the crawling techniques in our article.
Next is to get her used to different body positions. Don't just pick her up and reposition her. Best is to gently move her into other positions by gently pushing and pulling her. Let's say she lying on her back and you want to make her sit. Don't just pick her up and make her sit, but rather pull and push her gently into a sitting position. And if she's sitting and you want to get her tummy lying, rather push down until she eventually gets to tummy lying with your help.

Encouragement to Walk
Question: My son (7.5 months) is having difficulty supporting himself with his arms. He has good leg and tummy muscle strength, but his arms seem to be weak. Can you recommend an activity or toy that would promote his upper body strength? He is behind in the crawling department, so we are looking for ideas to help him catch up.
Answer: I'd say the best is to encourage playing against vertical surfaces. Try sticking magnets to a vertical surface for him to play with. Another option is to side sit (supporting himself on one side with his arm) while playing with the other arm. Of course you can even try the techniques given in our crawling article. Any of these activities will increase upper body strength. Child development diary... click here if you have any burning questions?

Encouragement to Walk
Question: I have a 5 and a half month old baby girl and a nephew almost 8 months. I'm using your strategies to help my baby crawl since 2 days ago and I'm already seeing results!
My nephew is already crawling like an expert. He started crawling at around 6 months. He can stand up and I can see he's very well balanced and very strong. But when I try to hold his hand to take a few steps he simply relaxes his legs and sits down. What can I do to encourage him to walk?
Answer: I'd guess he is just scared to walk. An easy way to get him walking is by encouraging "cruising" along furniture. This is when he faces and holds onto the furniture and then moves sideways along it. In no time he'll be walking. Child development diary... click here if you have any burning questions?

Old or New Toys?
Question: Do babies prefer their old toys or new ones?
Answer: Babies often get attached to their old toys. But they're always stimulated by new ones. I've found that you can keep interest in old toys by rotating them often. I like to take away a few older toys, put them in a bag and hide them for a week of two. After they've played with their newer toys I'll replace the new ones with those I've hidden. Shouldn't She be Walking Yet?
Question: My daughter is 18 months old. She can crawl and pull up and "cruise" furniture, but hasn't walked on her own yet. If we stand her with her back against the wall she will walk to us. Is there any cause for concern?
Answer: From the details you've given it doesn't sound as if there's a problem. She may have fallen and got hurt in the past. And may be scared of walking. Try to build her confidence. Encourage her by using push toys. Have a look at our baby toy article for a few ideas. Also encourage "cruising" along furniture. I'm sure in no time she'll be walking.

Does Crawling Influence Reading Abilities?
Question: I am reasearching the relationship between a baby's crawling and reading abilities. Is it true that crawling develops reading skills?
Answer:
This is may be difficult, but let's try an honest answer.
We know that crawling definitely develops skills like sense of direction, spatial and motor abilities. And these skills together with a few other skills lay the foundation for further development like reading.
So, in short I'd say crawling is not the only activity that teaches reading skills. But it definitely lays a vital foundation. Child development diary... click here if you have any burning questions?

Is Becoming Clingy Normal?
Question: Our son is 8 months old and has become extremely clingy (the last month or so). If someone talks to him he'll begin to whine for me. He has playdates and interacts extremely well with other children. I do not leave him with anyone else. What do I do?
Answer: At about 9 months children begin to make decisions. This is what your child is doing... and it's totally normal. This will go away within about 2-3 months. In the mean time, encourage and teach him to stay for very short periods with someone else. In the beginning it can literally be as short as a few seconds. Then gradually increase the time. How About Watching TV?
Question: My 3 months old loves to watch TV. Is it safe for his eyes?
Answer: If he doesn't overdo it, then is OK. But keep in mind, at this age he can drastically benefit more from other development activities, games and playing with toys. Watching TV gives him very little, if any, stimulation. And at this age he definitely needs stimulation more than watching TV. Child development diary... click here if you have any burning questions?
