The Perfect Infant Activity
The perfect infant activity is sought by many parents. They look for information to raise a gifted child. They simply want that one magic formula to unlock their infant's talents.
But one of the best activities for a developing infant is also one of the simplest... tummy time!
Putting your baby on his belly has been proven countless times to help her develop upper body strength and proper head control as she learns to hold her head up and push herself up with her arms.
And for developing infants... upper body strength and head control are absolutely vital milestones for further development.
For best results with this infant activity, place a blanket or pad on the floor and scatter 2 or 3 toys around in front of your child for her to explore. These should be simple, easy-to-grasp toys aimed at your child's age group.
For the youngest babies, bold colored toys are especially stimulating; older children will like more colorful toys, dolls and stuffed animals.
Although this infant activity doesn't require any special equipment, you may wish to explore the many special mats and cushions made specifically for tummy time. Many come with age-appropriate toys, such as rings and rattles, already attached.
Be careful, however, that your child doesn't get tired of tummy time because he sees the same toys every time!
Many tummy time cushions are made in such a way that the toys can be detached, so you can substitute other toys and keep things interesting.
As with any infant activity, be sure to monitor your child carefully during tummy time - especially if you have older kids or pets.
If using a blanket, ensure that it's heavy enough that it won't entangle your baby. If you don't have a heavy quilt or tummy time cushion, then an exercise mat is an inexpensive, comfy and safe alternative.
Tummy time doesn't have to be expensive or high-tech - just put your baby on the floor and let the fun, exercise and learning begin! It's the absolute best activity for babies.
