Absolutely Nothing Beats The Durability Of A Wooden Toy
A wooden toy - can you honestly say you've considered one
the previous time you bought toys?
I'll bet chances are slim.
When it came time for a toy for my own child's first
birthday, I wanted something very special. Not some
poly-whatcha-ma-call-it type creation, but something that
would stand the test of time.
Fortunately, I didn't have to search farther than my very
own memories. I spent hours playing with simple wooden blocks that Grandma's grandbabies still play with today.
Which wooden plaything would I pick? Will it be the classic
alphabet blocks upon which I learned my ABC's or perhaps
an everlasting tea set like the one I used to serve my
childhood princes and princesses?
But, one thing I know for certain… whatever wooden
toy I choose, she will have just as much fun as I had as a
child. And, the toy will again last a few more lifetimes.
Since man first began to carve things from wood, children
have been playing with all kinds of toys made from wood.
Sometimes I still think that motor skills were better
developed with their handmade toys than with some of
the toys we find today.
Our long-forgotten ancestors carved the first crude shapes
and offered them to the intensely curious little ones who
climbed up their parents' legs hoping for a better look.
Imagine the parents' surprise when Junior began stacking
oddly-shaped pieces of wood on top of each other. And just
think about Junior's level of motor skill to stack the
crude wooden shapes on top of each other.
That was… and still isn't an ordinary achievement.
The very first wooden toy may have been created completely
by accident. Even so, it didn't take early man long to realize
that as Junior stacked his blocks,
his concept of size, shape and idea of balance
became much sharper.
Whether by accident or any other means… early man was
assuredly impressed by how well occupied Junior was by these
wooden objects. Of course, the wooden toys we find today are
much better quality… but still intensely occupy our kids.
In that regard, little has changed.
If you consider buying any wooden toys for your child,
there's no need to get anything fancy. Having watched so many
children stack different sized wooden blocks
over the years, I'm still convinced that these must be your
best buy.
First off, it doesn't take any child long to take up the
challenge of stacking blocks on top of each other. In fact,
you'll soon find it becomes a serious challenge to stack as
many as possible. And then… hardly any play session goes
by without the kids building a house, yard, garage or
anything else for their other toys.
I could go on and on about the many things children have actually built and
done with the wooden blocks over the years… some of them
cannot, however, be disclosed here.
But I ensure you, there was always a lot of laughter around.
The only conclusion I always came to...
wooden toys
must at least be worth some consideration when buying a toy.
